Head of Legal and Compliance


Our client is an international and well renowned bank established in Luxembourg, offering tailor made wealth management solutions. They are looking to recruit a Head of Legal and Compliance reporting to the CEO.

Role/ Responsibilities: 

  • Organise, manage and supervise the Legal & Compliance department operations and activities, as well as related projects
  • Identify laws and regulations applicable to the bank and define associated constraints/issues so as to propose solutions answering both business and legal/regulatory requirements with the needed anticipation to permit the implementation of the necessary actions
  • Identify legal and compliance risks associated with the bank’s activities and internal processes, define activities and tasks to realise and explain them to relevant parties and to staff to ensure their effective implementation
  • Monitor the implementation of the necessary actions, defined to respect new law/regulations or to mitigate legal and compliance risks, and if needed escalate to the Authorized Management and/or to the Board of Directors
  • Cooperate/Support with the units in charge of the implementation and provide a specific reporting to Authorised Management about the status
  • Train, evaluate, motivate and support the team members so as to ensure a smooth and efficient running of their daily activities
  • Communicate internally to ensure accurate understanding of the rationales and consequences of rules/regulations for the bank and train employees on new applicable rules/regulations
  • Cooperate with external third parties (regulators, auditors, etc.) to ensure clear and transparent communication on the bank’s existing legal & compliance actions and recommended ones
  • Management of the legal cases/situations of the bank including client complaints and involve external support where necessary
  • Maintain and review all related documentation
  • Management of all official contracts signed with third parties by the bank
  • Management of all official communications with regulators and other official entities (e.g. CSSF, Parquet de Luxembourg, Police authorities, etc.)
  • Set up, review and optimise the department rules, workflows, procedures, processes and tools in order to guarantee the application of good practices within the bank and within the group
  • Ensure that Legal & Compliance departments of branches, subsidiaries follow the same rules and principles valid inside the bank and inside the group (functional responsibility)
  • Ensure regular update as required and formalise/document performed internal controls to evidence their execution and enable efficient reporting to the Authorized Management of the bank
  • If required be Secretary of Board of Directors meeting or of one of the special committees of the bank

Your Profile:

  • Master in finance, management or economics, preferably with a concentration in law
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in the banking sector, including experience within an internal/external audit and/or paralegal position
  • Generalist legal & compliance experience within the banking/financial sector
  • Very good knowledge of laws and regulations applicable to the banking/financial sector. Understanding of their objectives and rationales and ability to explain them to relevant parties in an easily understandable manner
  • Ability to identify relevant legal/regulatory requirements for the bank and effectively integrate them into its operations and processes, in a proactive and anticipated manner
  • Knowledge of best market practices in terms of legal and compliance as well as risk management. Ability to integrate them into the bank’s practices
  • Good general knowledge of financial/banking products, structures and operations
  • Fluent in English and French
